What is Otitis (Ear Disease)?

Otitis (Ear Disease) in Cats and Dogs

Otitis, or ear disease, is a common issue in both cats and dogs. It can cause discomfort and irritation for your furry friend, but with the right care and treatment, most cases can be managed effectively. At Your Family Vets Ltd, we’re here to guide you through the process of diagnosing and treating this condition.

What is Otitis?

Otitis refers to inflammation of the ear, which can affect the outer, middle, or inner parts of the ear. It’s usually caused by infections, allergies, parasites, or foreign objects, but underlying conditions like skin disorders can also contribute.

Symptoms of Otitis

Signs to watch for include:

  • Frequent scratching or rubbing of the ears
  • Redness, swelling, or discharge in the ear
  • Foul smell coming from the ears
  • Head shaking or tilting
  • Pain or sensitivity when the ears are touched

The Diagnostic Process

Diagnosing otitis involves several steps to determine the underlying cause:

  • Physical Examination: We’ll check your pet’s ears for redness, swelling, discharge, or other abnormalities.
  • Ear Swab and Microscopy: A sample from the ear can reveal bacteria, yeast, or parasites like ear mites.
  • Imaging: In more severe cases, X-rays or CT scans may be needed to assess the ear canal and surrounding structures.
  • Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected, testing can help identify specific triggers.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause of the otitis. Here are some common approaches:

1. Ear Flush

An ear flush is often the first step for cleaning out debris, wax, and discharge. This procedure is usually performed under sedation to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety.

2. Lateral Wall Resection

For chronic or severe cases, a lateral wall resection may be recommended. This surgical procedure involves removing the outer wall of the ear canal to improve ventilation and make cleaning easier. It’s particularly helpful in cases of recurring infections.

3. Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA)

In extreme cases where the ear disease is advanced or untreatable with other methods, a total ear canal ablation (TECA) may be necessary. This involves removing the entire ear canal to eliminate the source of chronic pain and infection. While this is a major surgery, it can greatly improve your pet’s quality of life.
