What is CT and why is it better than X-ray?

CT (Computed Tomography) uses many thin cross-sectional images to create a highly detailed 3D view inside your pet. Compared with standard X-rays, CT shows far more detail and separates overlapping structures—crucial for accurate diagnosis and planning.

  • 3D detail of bone, lungs, skull, spine & joints
  • Rapid scans (usually minutes) and fast results
  • Better surgical planning → smaller incisions, safer procedures

Common reasons we use CT

  • Head & dental: tooth root disease, jaw/skull issues, nasal disease
  • Spine & orthopaedics: suspected IVDD, elbow dysplasia, fractures
  • Chest & abdomen: lung nodules, masses, trauma assessment
  • Cancer staging: to assess spread and plan treatment
  • Ear disease: chronic otitis, middle ear (bulla) problems

We also perform contrast studies when appropriate to highlight vessels, organs or masses.

How the CT visit works

  1. Pre-CT consult: we examine your pet and confirm that CT is the right test.
  2. Fasting & sedation: most pets have light sedation or a short general anaesthetic to keep perfectly still.
  3. Scan: typically 5–20 minutes depending on the area.
  4. Report: images are reviewed by our vet; where helpful we liaise with an imaging specialist.
  5. Plan: we discuss results, options and costs the same day or within 24–48 hours.

Safety: CT uses X-rays. We keep doses as low as possible and only recommend CT when it will meaningfully improve diagnosis or treatment.

CT Scanner FAQs

Do all pets need a general anaesthetic?

Many scans are done under light sedation; some require a short general anaesthetic to ensure perfect stillness and the best images.

How quickly will I get results?

For urgent cases we often discuss same-day impressions. A full written report is typically available within 24–48 hours.

Is CT safe?

Yes—radiation doses are kept as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) and we only recommend CT when the benefits outweigh risks.

When is CT better than X-ray or ultrasound?

When we need 3D detail—e.g., complex fractures, spinal disease, nasal disease, lung nodules, ear bulla disease, or precise tumour mapping.

Can you accept referrals?

Absolutely. We offer imaging-only referrals or combined care. We’ll share the full DICOM set and report with the referring practice.
